Positron annihilation group

In our group we employ positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) for structural characterization of solids. PAS is a unique non-destructive technique with high sensitivity to open volume defects and atomic resolution. Using PAS it is possible to obtain very rich and detailed information about structural imperfections in a broad range of materials. In our group we focus mainly on the following topics:

  • defect characterization on the "atomic scale"
  • investigations of non-equilibrium defects created by irradiation or plastic deformation
  • studies of defect interactions
  • investigations of thermal stability of defects and defect recovery with increasing temperature
  • characterization of hydrogen-induced defects
  • investigations of free volumes in polymers
  • In addition, we work on development of PAS methodology, namely high-resolution positron-lifetime spectroscopy and digital techniques for precise measurement of positron lifetime and Doppler shift of annihilation gamma rays.

    Our laboratory is equipped with state-of-art PAS spectrometers with excellent parameters:

  • high-resolution digital positron lifetime spectrometer
  • high resolution and low background digital spectrometer for coincidence measurement of Doppler broadening.
