Atomic-scale surface physics

We image and manipulate atoms, molecules and localized charges using STM, nc-AFM and Kelvin-probe methods, from room temperature to cryogenic conditions.

Scientific focus

A central theme is the behaviour of individual electrons and atomic-scale defects at surfaces. Combined STM and nc-AFM allows us to switch charge states of adsorbed atoms and molecules and to follow localized electrons (polarons) directly in real space. Kelvin-probe measurements add local information on electrostatic potential and charge state. These experiments connect elementary charge dynamics with the macroscopic electronic and chemical properties of ionic and functional materials.
