Summary
Catalysis on single atoms has until recently been a limiting theoretical example of catalysis on metal clusters. The experimental preparation of catalysts where the catalytic reactions undoubtedly take place on single metal atoms supported on oxide surfaces however sparkled the development of catalysis on single atoms into a new and a vivid branch of research. Within the present project we propose preparation and investigation of model systems for catalysis on single atoms - oriented thin films of oxides carrying dispersed and thermally stable metal atoms. The model systems will allow characterization of the active sites containing metal atoms by high-resolution microscopic and spectroscopic techniques and measurements of the chemical reactivity of the dispersed metal atoms. Preparation and investigation of the model systems are inevitable for understanding the mechanisms governing the catalysis on single atoms and will contribute key information to the newly developing branch of research.
