Summary

This project aims at preparation and investigation of a novel class of model catalysts - oriented thin films of metal doped ceria MxCe1-xO2 that exhibit surfaces with a controlled amount of dopant atoms. Using in-situ surface science techniques [TDS + molecular beams, XPS, LEED, and STM] and ab-initio calculations we plan to investigate how type and concentration of metal dopants influence the physico- chemical properties of these surfaces [uptake and release of O2, adsorption and desorption of gases (CO, CO2, CH3OH), and surface reactivity (CO oxidation, CH3OH dehydrogenation)]. Expected output of the project - information on the effects of substrate doping on the catalysis over ceria - is relevant to both basic and applied catalysis research. Metal doping of oxide substrates is currently an empirical method to enhance the properties of industrial catalysts in exhaust purification and fuel reforming. Recent experiments suggest that dispersed metal ions on oxide surfaces may account for most of the catalytic activity in certain reactions.
